Rebecca Newell, the Volunteer Coordinator, manages the volunteer programme at Instant Neighbour. She plays a key role in welcoming and guiding new volunteers, describing the charity’s approach to volunteering as flexible and tailored to each individual’s needs.
“I will sit with the person first of all to get to know them and to find out what their interests are,” Rebecca explains. “Then we create a unique approach in the form of a personalised plan as they begin their volunteering journey with us.
“Some people start with just an hour a week and then build up as they gain confidence. We make sure volunteering fits their schedule and personal goals – this could be in the foodbank, the shop or our warehouse. We let them decide what’s best for them.”
Rebecca has seen firsthand how volunteering transforms individuals. She continues: “Some people arrive very shy and barely making any eye contact. However, after just a few weeks they are greeting everyone by name, making friends and feeling part of a community here.
“It's quite organic the way each person evolves at Instant Neighbour and it’s really rewarding to see this change in them.”
Instant Neighbour’s volunteer programme also provides a stepping stone into employment, as Rebecca says: “A lot of our volunteers are looking for jobs – having the experience of giving their time at Instant Neighbour helps bridge any gaps on their CVs.
“I think people underestimate how powerful it can be to have volunteering experience on your CV, especially when there’s gaps in your work. Employers do value it and do recognise it as something very worthwhile.
“We have seen so many of our volunteers go on to find work because of the confidence and skills they gain here because they have shown they are doing something by giving back to the community.”
Recognition is an important part of the volunteer programme at Instant Neighbour. Staff vote for their ‘Volunteer of the Month,’ with their reasons displayed on a board in the dedicated volunteer room.
“It’s just a small gesture, but it means a lot to our volunteers,” Rebecca says. “Many of them don’t get that kind of recognition elsewhere so we make sure they know how valued they are.
“They are volunteering to either get some experience or to just build a routine in their week. They don't always think about the impact that they are making and they don’t do it for the recognition or praise.
“We simply would not survive without our volunteers so it’s just a nice way to show them that we appreciate all their work and efforts.”
Kyle, a 17 year old student at Bucksburn Academy, has been gaining valuable work experience through volunteering at Instant Neighbour. Spending four hours every Wednesday at the charity, his main task is to help sort donations and assist in the shop.
“I enjoy volunteering here – it’s a great experience for me because it feels like a real job,” Kyle says. “It’s helping me prepare for the world of work and I feel more confident about applying for jobs after I leave school.”
As part of his work experience, Instant Neighbour has supported Kyle in writing his first CV – an important step as he plans his future career.
He continues: “I really enjoy my time volunteering here and I think it’s important to give my time back to something valuable.
“I like meeting new people and giving back to a charity that helps so many in need. I would encourage anyone to give it a go.”
Raquel, originally from Portugal, moved to Aberdeen in October last year.
She has since found a sense of belonging through her time volunteering at Instant Neighbour.
Raquel’s role is based in the foodbank. She helps out by packing food parcels, restocking supplies and keeping the area organised.
“Instant Neighbour is a great organisation,” says Raquel.
“Volunteering gives me a purpose whilst I search for a job. The team of people here are so friendly and supportive – I feel really happy to be a part of it.”
“She brings an amazing energy every time she walks through the door,” says Rebecca, praising Raquel’s dedication.
“Her enthusiasm inspires others and she motivates everyone around her.”
Joseph, who recently relocated to Aberdeen from Nigeria, volunteers in the warehouse and shop by assisting with donations, arranging furniture and assembling or dismantling items for sale.
“My favourite thing about volunteering is the people,” Joseph shares. “Everyone is so friendly and understanding. It’s a great atmosphere, and we’re always joking around and having a laugh – it keeps me going.”
Volunteering has also been a way to help Joseph step outside his comfort zone: “Before this, I sometimes wanted to be alone. Now, I socialise more and my confidence has grown.”
The charity is also supporting Joseph in his job search, as he says: “The team at Instant Neighbour have helped me build my CV and gain experience in a real work environment. I will continue to volunteer here for as long as I can.”
Volunteering at Instant Neighbour is more than just giving time, it’s about building a community where people support each other. Rebecca highlights the importance of building these social connections.
“Looking for work can feel lonely and isolating, but when volunteers come to us they realise they are not alone. They make friends, share job opportunities and spur each other on – it’s really great to see.”
For many, taking the first step into volunteering is the hardest part: “Sending that first enquiry or walking through the door can be daunting for people,” Rebecca says. “But once they’re here, they become a part of something special.”
“For anyone considering volunteering, I would say to just come and try it. There is something for everyone and I would encourage anyone to give back their time to something positive – you never know the impact it could have on others and yourself.”
