Mental Health Aberdeen is a local charity that provides free counselling and information services to children, young people and adults experiencing difficulties related to their mental health and wellbeing.
Mental Health Aberdeen was formed in 1950, making it one of the oldest charities working with people experiencing mental health difficulties.
Although the challenges faced by those suffering from mental health difficulties are enjoying increased visibility in society, it remains a subject that is often misunderstood, ignored and stigmatised. At Mental Health Aberdeen, we believe this neither should be, nor has to be the case.
Mental health and wellbeing is a key factor in delivering Scottish government targets of creating a more successful country that presents opportunities for everyone to flourish and reach their potential.
Mental ill-health can threaten the basic things many of us take for granted. Whether that’s our ability to manage our own lives, enjoy relationships with family and friends, or even to earn a living, mental illness can be an extremely destructive force in a person’s life, and stigmas that accompany the illness can make recovery even harder. Mental health remains a sensitive subject in society and it can be difficult to encourage people to open up and talk about it honestly. Some individuals suffering from the illness may, as a result find it hard to ask for help, or admit they are struggling.
This is why MHA exists. We offer help and support to those suffering from mental ill-health and accompany individuals as they work towards taking back control of their lives and in some cases reintegrating into our society. This help and support doesn’t merely manifest itself in direct aid. MHA knows that to truly tackle mental health, we must approach it from many directions. This is why, in addition to the help and support we provide, we also work within the community to raise public awareness of the reality of mental health issues and work with medical and governmental bodies to advise and recommend legislation and policies. We are one of the oldest mental health charities in the UK and it is important that we use this expertise to encourage best practice.
We have great opportunities for reliable, friendly and flexible volunteers to serve and assist customers with purchases at our charity shop at 231 Union Street, Aberdeen, AB11 6BQ.
