BECYCLE Workshop SCIO is a small, wholly volunteer operated and donations based community bike workshop that provides a free place to access practical help, education, learning and advice for maintaining and repairing bikes.
The workshop also provides free bikes to children (u18) and loans out bikes to anyone, with a fully returnable deposit system. It is currently open twice a week (8hours), every week of the year, no matter the weather. BECYCLE started operating around 2006 when 2 students began their voluntary work with the workshop based in a shed.
Throughout the years the locations were changing and growing into our current workshop and so did the numbers of volunteers and numbers of people able to find help through our services. The goal was the same from the start until now – to provide access to cycling to more and more people regardless of their gender, age, race, beliefs, status, income, etc.
To make that happen we are providing bikes on a library loan basis with a fully refundable deposit upon return of a bike. Bicycle can be leased for indefinite time, given that the six month lease is extended in person with a bike brought to the workshop for the purpose of checking it for possible need of repair – after a period longer than six months it is likely that some parts would degrade beyond repair if they were faulty what we are trying to prevent by checking and, if needed, fixing bicycles before extending the lease on them.
Additionally, we work as a community workshop which gives access to a wide range of tools necessary to repair or make adjustments on a bicycle. If needed the volunteers are there to help and give advice based on their experience.
